WA: Toxic waste company charged over fires
A Perth toxic waste company involved in a series of fires has been charged with failing
to comply with laws governing dangerous goods.
The fires overnight burnt down a chemical treatment plant in east suburban Bellevue,
and drums of chemicals were said to explode like rockets.
The fires also destroyed 15 hectares of bushland as well as timber logs in an adjoining
wood yard.
Fifty people were evacuated, but no injuries were reported.
The Department of Minerals and Energy says it has initiated 10 charges against the
company, Waste Control, each of which carries a maximum $50,000 penalty.
The charges are due to be heard in the Midland Court of Petty Sessions on February 26.
Damage to the plant and the timber yard is estimated at $1.5 million.
